For All Ages
Treat yourself to a program of swing music, dance, and an author event to kick off the Westminster Flower & Jazz Festival! Edward Allan Faine, author of books about swing and jazz, for children, teens, and adults, will be featured. His works include, Ellington at the White House, 1969, Bebop Babies, and Ned Ventures: Teenage Life in the 1950s. Herb Sell and his exquisite music ensemble will play a range of American swing from the 1930s and 1940s. GottaSwing Dancers will swing and jitterbug across the outdoor stage. From 10 am - 12 pm. This program is sponsored in part by a Community Arts Development Grant from the Carroll County Arts Council and the Maryland State Arts Council. A Celebrating America program.

This is a part of a four-week lecture series that will focus on the history of the United States from the Revolution through 2000. It is intended as an overview of the major issues and events that have shaped American culture and politics today. This session will cover Reconstruction, robber barons, and the rise of Progressivism. Our guest lecturer Gary Kavanagh is a retired federal employee. He holds a Master of Modern History and Diplomacy from George Washington University. He also previously taught social studies in Prince George's County. A Celebrating America program. All attendees need to register.

If you have thought about searching for your ancestors, but did not know how to start, this presentation will kick-off your research with five easy steps! Ms. Eileen A Souza's presentation will include the importance of genealogy, how you begin your search, information on forms and resources used in genealogy, citing your sources, and how to improve your skills. Eileen is a graduate of the National Institute of Genealogical Studies, earning a Professional Learning Certificate in Genealogical Studies, a graduate of the National Institute of Genealogical Research, and a graduate of the ProGen Study Group. She is the author of Research in Carroll County, published in the August 2012 issue of the Maryland Genealogical Society Journal. All attendees need to register. A Celebrating America program.
