Unshackling History: Reliving Experiences from American Slavery

Join historian Anthony Cohen from The Menare Foundation as he recounts his 1996 Walk to Canada, retracing the route of the Underground Railroad from Maryland to Canada. Cohen describes his research methods and experiences traveling through five states by foot, boat, and rail like thousands of fugitives before him. Cohen highlights the story of his harrowing six hour journey inside a wooden crate, smuggled onto a train like Henry Box Brown, a fugitive who mailed himself to freedom in 1849. A Celebrating America program. This program is sponsored in part by a Community Arts Development Grant from the Carroll County Arts Council and the Maryland State Arts Council.
