7:00 PM - Add to Outlook calendar  |  Add to Google calendar
For Adults
While the Gettysburg Address is the best known of President Lincoln’s speeches, many believe that the Second Inaugural Address is Lincoln’s most deliberative speech. Lincoln delivered his Second Inaugural Address on March 4, 1865 – a month before he was assassinated. In a sad recounting of the inevitability of the Civil War, Lincoln relies on his religious beliefs to make sense of the wartime trauma that gripped the country. Senator Joe Getty, a Lincoln scholar, will provide commentary on Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address, which is a Freedom Shrine Document. Senator Getty will discuss Lincoln’s principles and values, derived from his humble upbringing in rural America, as expressed in his Second Inaugural Address. A Celebrating America program.
