On June 20, 1863 West Virginia became the only state formed out of the Civil War as it broke from Virginia and became the 35th state. Many people believe that the split was over secession by Virginia which was opposed by those who lived in the western part of the state. But the feud went all the way back to 1776. The Civil War just gave western Virginians the opportunity they needed to develop their own separate state. Presented by local author Bob O'Connor. A Celebrating America program.
