John's Brown's raid at Harper's Ferry on October 16, 1859 is thought by many to have been the first shots of the impending Civil War. Brown, a vowed abolitionist, went to the federal arsenal to capture guns to give to fugitive slaves in hopes of ending slavery. He was captured, tried, and hanged in Charlestown. This program is offered in conjunction with the Civil War 150 exhibit. Civil War 150 is a national traveling panel exhibition organized by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History in partnership with The Library of America. The project, Civil War 150: Exploring the War and Its Meaning through the Words of Those Who Lived It, has been made possible in part through a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Exploring the human endeavor. A Celebrating America program.
