Join us as the bittersweet story of Annie and James Colwell comes to life. After Fort Sumter was attacked in 1861, many Americans were moved to join the fight. James Colwell, a well respected attorney, husband, and father of four, enlisted in the Union Army in Carlisle, Pennsylvania and then shared his intentions with his wife for the fist time. Their sympathies and sentiments differed on the conflict, as she hailed from Baltimore. Their letters to each other are chronicled in the book The Bitter Fruits which was based upon the master's thesis of a descendant, then expanded and published by the Cumberland County Historical Society in 1998.
