Circulation Clerk - North Carroll
Location:Hampstead, MD

Schedule and Other Information
37.5 hours per week
$30,810 annually plus benefits
Must be able to work day, evening, and weekend hours including Sundays.
Must be willing to receive US Department of State Passport Acceptance Agent Training within 6 months of hire and actively participate in passport services.

Job Summary:
Performs a variety of clerical functions related to providing customer service at the circulation desk; works under general supervision; performs other duties as assigned.

Essential Functions:
1. Checks in, checks out, and renews materials according to branch procedures; may include drive-through window service;
2. Communicates with customers about overdue materials, delinquencies, fees, or other circulation problems;
3. Processes incoming and outgoing reserves and interlibrary loans;
4. Sorts and places items on shelving carts, reserve shelves, in delivery boxes, or other location as appropriate;
5. Receives cash, checks, or credit card payments from customers for fines, fees and county real estate and water/sewer bills;
6. Explains registration policies and registers new customers or renews/updates customer registration records as necessary; inputs information into database;
7. Addresses customer complaints by offering solutions or referring to appropriate supervisor;
8. Provides support functions including but not limited to: opening and closing activities of the circulation desk and the branch; unpacking, sorting, and processing deliveries; ordering and receiving supplies; withdrawing materials from database; processing magazines/newspapers; repacking library material; and other activities as assigned;
9. May act as clerk in charge when necessary;
10. Uses various methods of communication (in-person, phone, and email) while providing friendly, courteous service to multiple customers at all library service points including drive-through windows;
11. Prepares branch bank and county deposits as needed: May make bank deposits using personal vehicle;
12. Participates in meetings, teams/committees/workgroups, outreach activities and training opportunities, as appropriate;
13. Assists customers in placing reserves, may answer basic information related questions;
14. May act as Passport agent and process passport applications; and,
15. Performs other duties as instructed and assigned.

Education and Experience:
1. High School diploma or G.E.D.;
2. Six months or more customer service or retail experience required; and,
3. Or equivalent technical training, education, and experience.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
1. Knowledge of library’s circulation processes, policies, and procedures;
2. Knowledge of the Dewey Decimal system and the basic principles of library organization;
3. Familiar with relevant computer equipment and associated software applications;
4. Ability to operate a variety of office equipment and machines, including copiers and cash registers;
5. Mathematical ability to receive cash and make change;
6. Effective communication skills;
7. Commitment to excellent internal and external customer service; and,
8. Keyboarding skills.

Physical and Environmental Conditions:

Work typically requires light physical effort in the handling of light materials, boxes, or equipment. Work may occasionally demand strenuous effort in the handling of moderately heavy boxes or materials. Work may require standing for extended periods of time and/or frequently require stooping and bending.

 The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting and training rooms, and libraries, e.g., use of safe workplace practices with office equipment, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations.
